Kirkham Cobra # 561
A History Lesson for those who are interested follows immediately below. Feel free to skip all this rambling if you’re already acquainted with the Kirkham’s and KMS.
Part 7 below is all about Kirkham
# 561 , currently offered for sale.
Part One: A NOT so humble beginning.
If you’re reading this, you might not be aware of the two now famous Morman brothers of Provo, Utah, Thomas and David Kirkham. David just made a bid for Govenor of Utah in the November 2012 election cycle. The two brothers are Brigham Young University engineering grads who fell in love with their Dads original 427 S/C Cobra, Vin number CSX 3104. As young men, in the late 80s, with the advent of CAD and computer driven manufacturing, they decided to digitize every single part of Dads original and set out to make a living selling Kirkham made Cobra parts. It didn’t take the brothers long to discover innumerable flaws in the originals parts, and they set out on a mission ( ha ha) to optimize their reproduction Cobra parts, making them stronger, more durable and fixing the problems that original cobra parts were prone to. The Kirkham’s parts fit the original Cobras perfectly, were made better than the originals, appeared completely original in every dimension, and for years the brothers sold their parts to Cobra restorers throughout the world. Life was good.
Part 2: The Big Idea
And then it happened. A very BIG ‘IT’ MOMENT. The brothers learned that their veteran Air Force uncle had purchased a Polish MIG Fighter Jet. And when the brothers went to check out this cold war relic, they found that it was similar to Dads Cobra, not in appearance obviously but in its construction. And they wondered, could the same group of intensely skilled Polish metal craftsmen who built the body of the MIG build a Cobra body ? The brothers had digitized every part on Dads Cobra, but the one part that no one in the world was making was aluminum bodies. They sent off a simple note with a photograph to the nearly empty and not functioning factory in Poland, workers present but idle, essentially asking ‘hey, can you guys build this’? The factories response the next day, ‘No Problem’.
Creating a dimensionally perfect body for the Cobra took a few years and a lot of hard work spanning across continents, cultures and language. But the Kirkham brothers were young, ambitious engineering grads with a passion for all things Cobra AND Engineering/Manufacturing. And when Thomas and David Kirkham made their debut of the Kirkham Cobra (they brought six of them) to the 1996 Monterey Historic Races, displaying to the automotive world the first completely New Aluminum Bodied Cobra’s in 30 years, those in attendance went absolutely berserk. The Kirkham brothers KMS Cobras stole the show. But one person who was present in Monterey that day wasn’t so pleased, and that’s putting it nicely according to those who were there. Ol’ Shel (Carroll Shelby) himself was, uh, to put it politely, not happy.
Part 4: A Gentleman’s Agreement, until it wasn’t.
After Shelby moved past his anger, ever the businessman/entrepreneur, he entered into a short lived handshake only agreement to purchase ALL the aluminum bodies that KMS /Kirkham Motor Sports could build. Shelby apparently told the brothers that no one on the planet could make Cobras better than the Kirkhams, but, no one on the planet could sell them better than Ol’ Shel himself, he proclaimed. Indeed, some may recall that Shelby had mysteriously discovered a batch of original chassis for the Cobra that never made it into production in the mid 1960s. With the help of the Kirkham’s, Shelby could return to the business of selling his Original Shelby American Cobras once again, just like the Kirkham’s were doing.
And so it was. Until it wasn’t.
Part 5: The Present / 2013
Ol’ Shel’s CSX 001, his own personal Cobra and the first made for public sale, was sold at auction in 2011. It sold for 5.2 Million USD.
CSX 002, and two other original Cobras, are owned by my friend and childhood boss Bruce Meyer. At age 70, Bruce just set an open air speed record at Bonneville, going over 200 MPH in 2012. You can watch this historical event on YouTube.
Bruce has a very special collection of vehicles, including the Cobras, that he’s been assembling since we were both much younger guys. He’s currently putting together his own museum of original, rarest of the rare, one of one, and ‘first’ vehicles offered…if you catch my drift. Very rarefied collector air indeed. Bruce is also one of the head honchoes of Los Angeles’ Peterson Automotive Museum’s famed Checkered Flag 200 Car Club, has won and judged numerous Pebble Beach Concours D’ Elegance Events (including introducing the Concours’ first HOT ROD with his own ‘first’ category ) and more. But I digress.
Part 6: Shelby and Kirkham/KMS
Sadly, Carroll Shelby died on May 10, 2012. His vehicles however, and in particular the Cobra (and those ferocious Shelby Mustangs), are as legendary as the man himself.
Shelby American, in Las Vegas, continues to manufacture Shelby Cobra component vehicles (less drivetrain) but no longer are they signed by the man himself. Shelby American purchases the aluminum bodies (and more) from the Kirkham brothers in Utah at Kirkham Motor Sports. These vehicles are badged as Shelby American component vehicles.
The Kirkham’s are noted as ‘suppliers’ to Shelby American for the 4000, 6000 and 8000 series Cobras that are sold by Shelby American.
Part 7: KMS # 561
Lets get this part out of the way first. # 561 has a dash plate signed by Carroll Shelby, as well as a Shelby American VIN plate with KMS numbers stamped into it. As such,
# 561 is not a Shelby American titled vehicle. It is a Kirkham / KMS titled vehicle, built by KMS in 2007, and purchased (less drivetrain) by the world renowned Kieth Craft of Kieth Craft Racing Engines.
KMS # 561 is an all aluminum bodied Cobra, with every single part of the car fitting perfectly on an original Cobra from the 1960s. Except # 561 is better made with all new KMS parts that are optimized to be stronger, more durable and outperform an original. And it’s lighter, at 2100 lbs with drivetrain.
# 561 has two components that have deviated from the original. The Cobras of the 1960s had Girling Brakes, which were not capable of stoping the car well. # 561 has Wilwood Racing Brakes, which provide a more capable braking experience than the Girlings. The original Cobras also had breakage issues and weight issues with the suspension components. # 561 has a billet suspension, which far outperforms the original and is needed on a car that is front end heavy and powerful.
Just like the original, # 561 has all the switches correctly where they belong, including a reverse direction speedometer, Wilton Wool Carpet covering the interior and trunk, and Connolly Leather Seats. The Moto Lita aluminum riveted steering wheel is present, as is the aluminum handbrake, pedals and nearly every other component of the car.
# 561 is highly optioned with a 42 gallon fuel cell, driver and passenger vents, a TKO Tremec 5 speed transmission, Dana rear end with a 342 Gear Set, polished stainless steel side pipes, Halon Fire suppression system, and a custom fitted cover.
The body of # 561 is among the rarest in the world. Rather than dressing it up with paint, # 561 is a brushed aluminum finish with two polished racing stripes down the middle. There may be a couple hundred configured this way, as its a very expensive and time consuming process to achieve this finish. Secondly, only a handful of aluminum polishers are in the US who can create this finish. Guess what, about that finish ? It’s simple to maintain with Windex, water and Scotch bright # 3 Maroon Pads.
And that Keith Craft Built Engine mentioned earlier ? It’s a full out racing motor, made with the finest parts available. How about an Robert Pond Aluminum 427 Side Oiler Block, bored to 482 cubic inches. Wisco Pistons, Diamond Rods and more. Every part weighed, polished, balanced, tolerances documented for each part, with a complete set of dyno sheets. A Holley Demon Carb .
The numbers ? 626 horsepower and 600 lbs of torque on pump gas. 2100 lb car. You do the math.
Did I mention how many miles the car has been driven since it was built by Keith Craft ? Wait for it…370 miles. Total. Three Hundred and Seventy Miles.
